19th World Orchid Conference & Show - January 27, 2008

A couple of week’s ago I got a call from Fran Brown, a retired friend (BCC Librarian, Central Campus) about attending the 19th World Orchid Conference & Show in Miami.  She insisted it was her treat and all I had to do was show up.  Fran knows my weakness for orchids.  So yesterday, Betty Brady, Holley Gilley and Jim Wilson and I met at Fran’s place and traveled down to Sheraton Miami Mart and Exhibition Center at Northwest 72nd Ave in Miami.  The place was packed.  There was the major exhibition floor packed with nursery displays and then vendors along the walls.  The displays were awesome!  Orchids of every kind, description, and color in natural arrangements.  Upstairs were seminars, vendors (which included a South Florida winery), and educational exhibits.

After a lot of oohing and aahing, Jim and Holley bought a couple of orchids.  Holley was especially taken (as well as I ) with a variety called “flame thrower” with white, orange, and green coloration.  It’s quite breath taking.  Also, unbeknownst to us, Holley bought everyone one a bottle of the South Florida wine.  Cheers, Holley and Jim!

After the show, we were scheduled to go eat.  Holley and Jim suggested Garcia’s in Miami on the Miami River.  Fresh seafood was the order of the day.  The food was very good, the conversation and company was great, and it was the perfect way to end the day.  Dinner was compliments of Fran!  Once  back, Holley and Jim surprised us all with the bottles of wine.  What a great way to spend Saturday - friends, orchids, food!
