A Night in Miami - April 15, 2012

Last night was my final in the 2011-2012 concert series for the New World Symphony at the Adrienne Arsht Center. I’ve already order the 2012-2013 season tickets!

The concert was preceded by a wonderful meal at Michy’s Restaurant, my second time at that great establishment.  I started with a half dozen raw Pacific Ocean oysters that were really delicious.  They serve with horseradish, cocktail sauce and a nice spicy house sauce.  My entrée was the whole yellowtail snapper with Malaysian curry, green and ripe mangoes and hearts of palm.  The food is excellent, but I think what I like best about the place is the service.  Everyone is very friendly and attentive and very helpful.

The concert was Brahms "Concerto No. 1 in D minor for Piano and  Orchestra, Opus 15" and Shostakovich’s "Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Opus 47."  I preferred the Shostakovich over the Brahms but I think it mainly because of the guest pianist for the Brahms work.  Hèléne Grimaud was quite good but her body movements during her playing really distracted me.  Leonard Slatkin conducted both and was excellent.  The New World sounded as good under his conduction as it usually does with Michael Tilson Thomas.
