Eye Exam and Retirement - March 6, 2013

Today I was scheduled for my annual eye examination.  It used to be every two years and then about four years ago I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic and eye exams went to every year.  The good news is no new lenses, no changes, only slight beginnings of cataracts (to be expected at my age).  Once a year I am reminded how I dislike to have my pupils dilated for the examination.  Even dark sunglasses don’t help and the light becomes painful.

In any case, I was settling up accounts at the end and was getting ready to make the next appointment.  The young lady at the desk asked me about the first Wednesday in March at 10:30 am (the same as this year).  I said no, I wasn’t sure when spring break was next year and that the only reason I accepted 10:30 am this year was it coincided with my spring break.

It was at that exact moment that I realized it wouldn’t make any difference when I scheduled the appointment in March since I would be retired as of February 28, 2014.  This is the first time where I’ve made an annual appointment and not had to worry about how early or late in the day to make the appointment.  This is the first time the concept of retirement has become real for me.

I do admit to spending some of the spring break this year looking up medicare, medigap, and medicare advantage questions.  That still has no basis in reality as of yet.  Making future appointments is real.

In a sense, it’s now official, I need to get on with the planning of the rest of my life.
