I hate the politics of the state but love the beauty of this place. As much as any place in my life, it was called home.
I was born at St. Joseph’s hospital in Meridian, Mississippi and from there we followed my Dad from job to job with the state highway department until he was recalled to service in the Korean War.
Once he returned, he eventually ended back with the highway department and retired after 33 years with them. That career included many moves and it was not uncommon for my brother Archie and me to change schools two or three times a year.
I went to the University of Mississippi for undergraduate and graduate school and additional graduate studies at the University of Mississippi Medical School. As far as I know, all of my close relatives are buried in the state and my brother and his wife still live there.
Most of our formative years were spent in and around Morton, Mississippi and Brandon, Mississippi and the state does get into your blood.
Until I moved to Fort Lauderdale, most of my life had been spent somewhere, someplace in this state. Now, I have lived in Fort Lauderdale longer than all the combined locations in Mississippi.
