Adamo's The Gospel of Mary Magadlene - June 19, 2013, 7:30 pm - San Francisco War Memorial Opera House

This was the world premier of this opera and I would like to tell you I stayed for the whole opera but I left during intermission.  I had just been hiking in the Muir Woods that morning and climbed Mount Tamalpais and was simply exhausted and couldn’t stay awake.  The set design was excellent, albeit complicated and the voices were superb.  Hopefully, I’ll have another opportunity to see this one.

The exhaustion continued the next day and I bailed on the last opera of the three on this trip, Tales of Hoffmann with the consolation that I had seen the Florida Grand Opera production of this one.

The premise of The Gospel of Mary Magdalene is that Jesus wed Mary Magdalene against Peter’s wishes.  Two things bothered me about this production.  First the religious aspect of the opera and that SFO needed to hold an “after opera” discussion of the opera.  I don’t know about the session, but can only hope it not try to defend the concept.  Hopefully, with Dan Brown’s books, the concept of Jesus taking a bride is not a new one.
