BELLINI’S NORMA - November 5, 2005 - San Francisco War Memorial Opera House

I, for some reason, cannot find the date that I was in San Francisco for this opera.  I remember asking my friend Wade if he wanted to see the opera and he made some comment about how he’d had enough of “that Druid bitch.”  Normally, I keep pretty accurate records of my travels but I can’t find any entry in my calendars for San Francisco in 2005.  I know I saw the opera, because the stage design was so unique and I know it was not in Miami at the Florida Grand Opera because the first opera I saw there was in the new opera house and they performed Norma in 2004 before that was open.  I also remember the name Zoran Todorovich as Pollione.

In any case, it’s an opera about a Druid seeress and her love of a Roman proconsul.  They have two children together but he tires of Norma and decides he loves Adalgisa.  Norma finds out and decides to kill her children.  She relents and then she tells the Druids of Pollione’s deceit.

She and Pollione mount the funeral pyre together.
