DONIZETTI’S THE DAUGHTER OF THE REGIMENT (LA FILLE DU RÉGIMENT) - October 16, 2009 - San Francisco War Memorial Opera House

Marie is the “mascot” of the soldiers of the 21st regiment.  The Marquise of Berkenfeld appears and comments on the rudeness of the French - news to most people, and Sulpice restores order.  In the opera, Tonio, an enemy soldier falls in love with Marie but Marie can only marry someone from the 21st.

The Marquise  arranges a marriage for Marie (whom she tells is her sister’s daughter) but Tonio seeks her out.  In the end, the Marquise confesses that Marie is her daughter and allows Tonio to marry Marie (after he joins the regiment).  All is well in the end.

Wikipedia notes the opera is best known for the tenor role as sugn by Juan Diego Flórez.  Apparently Pavarotti made the role famous with his rendition of  the aria“ah! mes amis, quel jour de fête!” that contains nine high C’s.

I think I most remember Diana Damrau’s performance as excellent with Juan Diego Flórez as equally good.
