GAETANO DONIZETTI’S LUCREZIA BORGIA - October 2, 2011, 2 pm - San Francisco War Memorial Opera House

This was absolutely the best opera of the three I saw in San Francisco (the other two were Heart of a Soldier and Turandot.  What a mean woman.  Lucrezia finds Gennaro is her grown son and ends up accidentally poisoning him.  It has everything include Gennaro and Orsini as lovers in probably one of the first gay love stories in opera.  Renée Fleming, in my opinion lives up to the hype.  She had an exquisite voice that brought several ovations from the audience.  Gennaro as sung by Michael Fabiano was equally wonderful.  Their voices meshed perfectly on stage.  Elizabeth DeShong singing a male role was pretty good considering she had to play male on stage.  The image is from the San Francisco Opera web page at www.sfopera.com.

Other cast members include:

Ladies of the Court: Mary Finch, Claire Kelm, Sally Mouzon, Sally Munro.

A Voice: Jere Torkelsen.
