Mozart’s Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute) - January 26, 2013, 7:00 pm - Florida Grand Opera

Well, the sets and costumes were nice but not as nice as those done by Jun Kaneko for the San Francisco Opera.  Interestingly, Sarastro was performed by Jordan Bisch who was the Second Man in Armor in San Francisco’s production of The Magic Flute.  I think my opera companions were in agreement that Jeanette Vechionne as Queen of the Night had a beautiful voice but it lacked projection and dominance of the orchestra.  Her performance of her most famous aria “Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen” seemed technically correct but a little forced for a coloratura soprano.

Andrew Bidlack was superb in his role as Tamino and I thought Jonathan Michie was excellent as Papageno.  He certainly was comical enough, in both costume and manner.  The only comment among my companions was the use of the 50’s time period for much of the costuming and asides to the audience.  Another comment was about how the opera was introduced with a bed scene that kept reappearing (with Tamino in pajamas).  Even the Miami Herald review suggested that at times it was over done.  I thought Jordon Bisch as Sarastro was good but the low notes were sometimes not heard over the orchestra from my nosebleed section of the Arhst.

Overall, I think the Florida Grand Opera did a wonderful job on one of the more important operas.  As I have mentioned before, I’m not much of a Mozart fan but I do like The Magic Flute.
