MOZART'S The Magic Flute - June 16, 2012, 8 pm - San Francisco War Memorial

I've never seen The Magic Flute, so this was new for me.  Normally, I'm not a fan of Mozart's operas, but I need to revise that assessment after this opera.  The set and costumes were designed by Jun Kaneko and it was amazing.  The set, in essence was simply animated graphics.  They were spell binding but definitely did not detract from the voices.  It only enhanced the opera.  In reality, there were only a few props on the stage.  Two voices really stood out to me: Albina Shagimuratova from Russia as The Queen of the Night, and Alek Shrader as Tamino.  All the others were excellent but these two stood out.  Shagimuratova really hit the high notes with the major aria of the night.

I'll see the Florida Grand Opera version of this in 2013, but it will really have to shine to outdo this production.
