RICHARD WAGNER’S GOTTERDAMMERUNG - June 19, 2011, 1 pm - San Francisco War Memorial Opera House

A five hour, 30 minute marathon with two intermissions, this opera is not for the faint hearted.  It’s even tough on the singers.  My friend Wade tells the story of an interview with Brigitte Nielsen who was asked what it took to perform the Ring Cycle and her reply was supposedly “Comfortable Shoes.”  Ian Storey had vocal problems in Act II and it was questionable as to whether he could continue.  He finished the opera on a strong note after treatment by the house doctor.

Of the four operas, I have to admit it was my least favorite, at least, until the final act.  The final act is quite moving, as well is the music that goes with the story.  Nina Stemme certainly solidified her reputation as the next Brünnhilde of note.  She led the curtain call and Runnicles pushed her center stage again at the end.
