Verdi’s La Traviata - Tuesday, June 17, 2014 - War Memorial, San Francisco

I don’t know what it is about this production but I don’t think I’ve ever seen San Francisco Opera do a worse performance.  It was if the cast met for the first time on stage during the production.  Everything was disjointed with the cast simply singing their roles with no interaction with each other or any role playing at all.  Apparently, I was not the only one who thought this.  My seat mates all panned the performance and the opera critic for the San Francisco Chronicle destroyed it in his review (I read the review after seeing the production).  The voices were good but lacked any emotion.  Nicole Cabell stretched several times and forced some notes and apparently, according to my seat mates, missed some notes entirely.

I pretty much panned the Florida Grand Opera production of this but I now think they did a better job than San Francisco Opera.

The sets were OK and the orchestra seemed as lost as the cast.  If you are interested in the story, review the Florida Grand Opera performance but if you plan to see this in San Francisco, take a book with you to read.
